Fitness Resolutions - Check Yourself Before You Wreck Yourself

A simple proactive self-check-in done regularly can keep you focused on your new goal for the year or it can help you reassess your priorities as you go, saving a lot of time and heartache.  

The Simple 5 Step Guide to the Self Check-in

1. Do you have a strong sense of purpose?

When you wake up in the morning, are you excited to get up and get into your day? Or do you procrastinate so you don’t have to get started?

Keep in mind that while we may not feel like leaping for joy every day when we have an exciting purpose and goal to strive for, we do feel that energy or motivation to get started.

If not, now is the time to take a few moments to rethink your goals, and adjust.

2. Are you being helpful?

To yourself, that is.  Take the time to contemplate your feelings about events and situations that occur in your everyday life.  Are you helpful to yourself by expressing your opinions and feedback?

Or are you using the skill of ‘being agreeable’ as a way to hide from confrontation?  Give yourself a chance to express yourself and allow yourself to feel all the feels. Denying yourself only puts you on track to experience resentment and anger instead.

Reflecting on your needs before you can help others helps you to remain kind in a sustainable manner.  Looking after your needs is one key to happiness and feeling purposeful.

Consider your goal – is it your dream?  Is it what you want?  Is it helpful to you?

3. How much progress have you made?

As you reassess those goals*, are you tracking your progress?

What counts as progress? Everything, as long as you are moving in the right direction. People mistakenly believe you have to achieve great things in a short time to be considered successful. Remember that all the small accomplishments add up over time.

Celebrate your milestones, acknowledge the good things you’re doing! Try to add to your achievements each day with one new step (not a marathon or a sprint).

4. Do you feel happy?

This is a curly question.  I know no-one is happy all the time but when you think of your life in general terms, what’s your overall feeling?

If you are unhappy, what are the things that can give you a happiness boost – small or large?

Can you make giving yourself a happiness boost part of your day? Making your happiness a priority will make a difference to you, and to everyone around you as well.

5. Are you feeling well?

The foundation for everything in your life is health. So get quiet, get still, and listen to your body.  Do you feel well? Are you thriving? Do you have your glow on?  Are you feeling good with lots of good energy?

Don’t skim past this question. If you’re not well, be aware you may have to make changes. For the better.

Your body knows what you need to do. It could be more sleep, daily meditation or a yoga class, joining a run club or lifting some weight. Do you need some more time connecting with friends, outdoor time, or just some down relaxation with a good book? Only you will know what the answer is. The key is to listen, make a plan and then follow through.
